Ingredient Tips & Equipment Information
- The malt powder I used was Horlicks, it's easy to find in the shops with the hot chocolate.
- You can use any type of milk for this recipe.
- Make sure to use cocoa powder, and not a hot chocolate powder. Cocoa powder will give a stronger chocolate flavour and not add any extra sweetness.
- Although I provide cup measurements, I highly recommend weighing your ingredients out using digital kitchen scales. It is the most accurate way to measure ingredients and will ensure the best results. Digital scales are very low cost and can be purchased for around £12 ($16.50) .
- For teaspoon (tsp) and tablespoon (tbsp) measurements, please use measuring spoons and not the type of spoons you eat with. Again this will ensure accuracy and provide the best results.

What is malt powder?
Malt powder, or malted milk powder, is made with malted barley, wheat and milk powder. It gives drinks and bakes a malty taste. I used Horlicks for this recipe as it's easily available, you can find it in the supermarkets with the hot chocolates. Another option is Ovaltine.
How many servings does this recipe make?
I used 300ml glasses and this recipe made two servings. If you use smaller glasses, you will get more servings, or you can double the recipe for more servings in the same or similar size glasses I used.
Can the milkshake be made gluten free?
Unfortunately malt powder, or malted milk powder, is not gluten free. I am not aware of any gluten free alternatives. You can still make this milkshake, just without the malt powder. As Maltesers are also not gluten free, you can use Delishios by a brand called Schar, which you can get from Asda. Please do check the labels of everything you use to make this recipe if you are serving it to anyone with an allergy or intolerance.
Can the milkshake be made dairy free?
Yes, you will need to use a dairy free milk and a dairy free vanilla ice cream. You will also need to use a dairy free malt powder, Horlicks do sell a vegan version. Please do check the labels of everything you use to make this recipe if you are serving it to anyone with an allergy or intolerance.

- For extra indulgence you could drizzle chocolate sauce on the inside of the glasses before pouring the milkshake in!

Lovely drink, add ice before blitzing and it's similar to KFC Crushem.
I back up your advice about weighing scales. I once advised an experienced home cook in America to use scales, after two weeks she replied that her baking had improved considerably.
