Ingredient Tips & Equipment Information
- You can use either butter or a baking spread for the crumble topping. I use unsalted buter, but salted won't make it taste salty, so don't worry if that's all you have.
- I really recommend using light brown soft sugar if you can, but if you can't get hold of it, you can use golden caster sugar or regular caster sugar (superfine sugar) instead.
- Mixed spice is a British spice blend containing cinnamon, coriander seed, nutmeg, clove, pimento and ginger. If you can't get hold of it, you can omit it, or use another spice like cinnamon, ginger or nutmeg instead.
- Although I provide cup measurements, I highly recommend weighing your ingredients out using digital kitchen scales. It is the most accurate way to measure ingredients and will ensure the best results. Digital scales are very low cost and can be purchased for around £12 ($16.50) .
- For teaspoon (tsp) and tablespoon (tbsp) measurements, please use measuring spoons and not the type of spoons you eat with. Again this will ensure accuracy and provide the best results.

How to make Apple Crumble for Two
Make the crumble by mixing together the plain flour and light brown soft sugar. Then add the butter and use your fingers ro rub it into the flour mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. You can also use a fork or a food processor to do this. Set it aside. For the apple mixture, peel, chop and core your apple. Mix it with the cinnamon, mixed spice, cornflour and light brown soft sugar.
Divide the apple mixture between the ramekins, then add the crumble on top. Place the ramekins on a baking tray (in case they bubble over at all, this will catch it), then bake for 30 minutes, or until golden and bubbling. Serve warm.

What size ramekins do you need?
The ramekins I used were 9cm in diameter and 5cm deep. This is quite a common and generic size of ramekin, so if you don't already own them, they should be easy enough to get hold of.
Can you make the Apple Crumble for Two without ramekins?
Yes, you can put the mixture into a small baking tin or dish, then when it's baked, grab a spoon each and share!
Can this recipe be made in advance and can it be frozen?
Yes, you can assemble and bake the individual apple crumbles in advance. Let them cool fully, they store covered in the fridge. Re-heat as required and eat within 3 days. You can also freeze the baked crumbles (do check your ramekins can be put in the freezer first, if not, transfer the mixture to some tupperware) for up to 3 months. You can also make the crumble mix in advance and freeze it unbaked. I don't recommend storing the unbaked apple mix as apples don't last long once exposed to air.
What kind of apples should you use?
Any sweet eating apples or cooking apples will work well. I tend to choose Gala apples, but I've also used Jazz, Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Bramley and apples from my stepmums's garden before for apple crumble.
Can this recipe be made gluten free?
Yes, just swap the plain flour for a gluten free plain flour blend. I would also recommend checking that the cornflour you use is gluten free. Please do check the labels for everything you use to make this recipe if you are serving it to someone with an allergy or intolerance.
Can this recipe be made dairy free?
Yes, all you need to do is replace the butter in the crumble mix with a dairy free alternative, then the recipe will be dairy free. Please do check the labels for everything you use to make this recipe if you are serving it to someone with an allergy or intolerance.
What can you serve the Apple Crumble for Two with?
- Custard
- Ice cream
- Whipped cream
- Pouring cream

- Drizzled with melted Biscoff or salted caramel sauce
- A combination of the above!
More tips for making the Apple Crumble for Two:
